Angstrom Levy vs The Spot (Image vs Marvel) VS Prediction Blog

“I have both held and beheld unlimited power, and of it I know but one thing. It drives men mad.” - Alexander the Great

Angstrom Levy, the interdimensional archenemy of Invincible
The Spot, the portal hopping villain of the week to Spider-Man

The multiverse can seem to be a vast well of infinite potential, especially to those smart enough to access it. However, an experiment gone wrong would lead to these scientists becoming some of the most dangerous men in their multiverses. And with their ability to directly carve a path to whatever world they wish, there’s little chance anyone has of getting away from their vengeance. So between these two, will Angstrom erase this spot from the universe, or will he be shown that he wasn’t as invincible as he thought? Let’s see.

Before We Begin

For Angstrom, the media list will be relatively simple. The main source will be the original Invincible comic, alongside the various other comic series set in the same world. The TV series will also be included, due to Kirkman being a major hand behind it and generally treating it as a way to improve the story of the original comic, meaning differences it brings are fair to consider canon. The mobile game Invincible: Guarding the Globe will also be included, as while its canon status is unconfirmed, the story does somewhat line up with the main canon and it doesn’t diverge enough to not be considered secondary material. We’re not going to be discussing any of the various crossovers Invincible has had, either as a part of some comic event or in separate mediums such as with Mortal Kombat or Funko Fusion Finally, content warning as Invincible has a lot of gore and mature subject matter, and spoiler alert as this will freely discuss future elements of the Invincible comic that have yet to be seen in the animated series.

Angstrom Media List:

  • Invincible (2003 - 2018 Comic)

  • Other comics set in the Invincible universe

  • Invincible (2021 Animated Series)

  • Invincible: Guarding the Globe

  • Invincible VS promotional material

  • The Official Handbook of the Invincible Universe

As for the Spot, there is a rather notable divide with this match on the question of which version of Spot to focus on, the one from the original comics, or the one from the recent Spiderverse films. While his portrayal in Across the Spiderverse is very popular and is likely who most people are thinking of when it comes to comparing a version of the Spot to Angstrom, it is undeniable that in a prediction blog format, solely focusing on Spiderverse Spot would be fairly limiting, given the fact his story will not be complete for another 2 years as of the writing of this. For those reasons, this will be mainly focusing on the original comics version of the character from Marvel Earth 616. But for the sake of fairness due to Angstrom being allowed alternate media, and as a way of hopefully appeasing those who’d rather see a discussion of other versions of him, this will be discussing Spot under a soft-composite lens. This means that details and scaling from other versions of the character will be brought in, but only as long as these extra versions remain compatible with the original version of the character.

Spot Media List:

  • Mainline Marvel Comics and guidebooks

  • Spider-Man: The Animated Series

  • Marvel’s Spider-Man

  • Spider-Verse Films

Background

Angstrom Levy

“No… I need revenge! I need to make HIM PAY! I WON’T REST UNTIL I KILLED…!”

Originally, Angstrom Levy was a man with good intentions. Born with the ability to create portals to alternate realities, he’d find out this own universe was unique. Not only was he the only version of himself who could open these portals, but in all of them a half human hero by the name of Invincible would betray his home planet for alien conquerors. Wanting to save the knowledge of these worlds, he’d gather his alternate selves and attempt to pool their knowledge together into his own mind. But when the machine was being activated, his world’s Invincible would come in, and believing this experiment was done for ill, would attempt to stop it, causing everything to go wrong. While Angstrom survived, the incomplete merging of his alternate selves and a new mutation would cause him to go mad, and would lash out at Invincible, seeing this as proof his world’s version of the half-Viltrumite was just as wicked as the others.

He’d then attempt to take his revenge by threatening the hero’s loved ones, and try to whittle him down by sending him adrift between dimensions. All he did with this, though, was trigger the hero’s rage, as he would then beat Angstrom to near death. He’d then be saved by a mysterious group known as the Technicians, who would save his life and give him another chance for revenge. This time, Angstrom aimed to make the world see Invincible as evil by exposing them to the horrors of the alternate realities, unleashing an army of evil versions of Invincible on the world. However, this too failed, and his debt to his new overlords would keep him away from his goal for years. When he returned, he’d find a world where Invincible had seemingly died free from his vengeance.

But when Mark returned to earth, he’d once again attempt to take his revenge. However, he’d find out from the hero’s wife, Atom Eve, that he truly was meant to be a hero. Rattled, he’d come to realize how far he’d fallen from his once benevolent roots. But before he could change, he’d be dragged into another dimension by one of these Evil Invincibles, attempting to take their own revenge on him. He’d ultimately lose his life in this world, dying at the hands of a hero that had darker intentions of their own. But some say his influence still lingers, with successors he made ready to continue his grudge long after his death…

The Spot

“Because of you, I lost my job, my life, my face! I made you into a hero, YOU MADE ME INTO THIS!”

Johnathan Ohnn, no matter the continuity we’re focusing on, was an absolute genius. Fascinated with the mysteries of the universe, he went to M.I.T to continue his studies, not letting any outside force get in his way, even with balancing fatherhood and science all together. However, said want for studies eventually got him into trouble with the Kingpin, who tasked him into trying to reproduce Cloak’s powers by reproducing radiation levels. He managed to succeed, creating a small black portal, while also shutting down the city’s powers. Johnathan eventually stepped into the portal, sending him into a dimension where it was half light, half dark, and with an infinite stream of portals. Ohnn eventually swam out of the dimension and back to his own universe, but his body was completely changed. The portals stuck into his own body, covering him with black spots from head to toe. He was no longer just a humble scientist, he was now The Spot.

Of course, Spot’s origin wildly changes with the Spiderverse films. While still a genius working with the Kingpin, his transformation was way more drastic with the Super-Collider’s destruction and the dark matter he’s carrying transforming him into the Spot. He however, built up a seething anger for who did this to him: Spider-Man. And what was a former C-Tier villain turned into an multiversal threat, figuring out multiversal travel, powered himself up with another Super-Collider, and gave his rival, Miles Morales a future of what’s to come: the destruction of his own universe and death of his father. Will Spot be successful with this new plan? It remains to be seen, but one thing’s for sure: he’s the biggest threat to the multiverse and all will never treat him as a joke as before.

Intelligence & Skill

Angstrom Levy

Even before the accident, Angstrom was a certified genius, being able to bring hundreds of alternate versions of himself together. After merging with these alternate selves, while his sanity did take a hit, he also gained a massive boost to his intelligence. This has been directly stated to put his raw intelligence on par with Robot, a genius who’s created a wide variety of advanced technology, and who’d prove himself to be a skilled leader at many points.

Angstrom has demonstrated himself as a formidable fighter during his fights with Invincible, as while he can’t compete with the hero in power, he's more than capable of pressing using his abilities and arsenal to keep even him on the backfoot. Whether that be through constantly shifting the battlefield, stranding him between dimensions to tire him out, or just leaving them trapped in dead worlds forever, Angstrom is a fearsome enemy to meet.

The Spot

To call Jonathan Othnan a genius would be an understatement. He possesses a vast understanding of multiple fields like science, biology and Technology. He worked together with a group of scientists to help revive silvermane from the dead using cybernetics, creating a machine that was able to somewhat replicate the hero “Cloak” powers( abilities that can traverse through dimensions) after testing him for like a day.

Despite not having combat training, he was able to use his portals to attack Spider-Man from multiple angles leaving him unable to fight back. He has used his portals to even send his foes into nearby objects like a brick wall. He can merge multiple spots together to transport larger obstacles in his way. Anticipates Spider-Man sneak attack and phases through his attack. He’s also kept up with other notable Marvel heroes, like Daredevil, Deadpool, Jessica Jones, and Winter Soldier.

Equipment

Angstrom Levy

Cybernetics

After his near death at the hands of Invincible, Angstrom gained multiple cybernetics from the Technicians who rescued him. They’ve generally enhanced his physicality, and are even able to feel as if they’re real. They also allow him to fly and create holographic screens.

Drone Orbs

Cybernetics weren’t the only thing he gained from The Technicians, as he also gained access to a large amount of drone orbs. Each of them are equipped with camera lenses which he’s always aware of. They’re good for spying on enemies, as they can fly fast enough to keep up with Oliver, turn invisible, and self-destruct if found. Though Angstrom is more than capable of using them more offensively, as he can make them attack enemies en masse and restrain their movements.

Floating Platform

He also has this floating platform which he can use to float on.

Artifacts

Playable units in Guarding the Globe can equip a variety of special artifacts, which each give them a special ability if equipped.

Abilities

Angstrom Levy

Portal Creation

Angstrom’s main power is his ability to summon portals to alternate dimensions. He can summon them whenever they want, and he can use multiple at once, seemingly without much limit on how much he can summon. These portals can range in size from 2.5 to 8 meters in diameter,  and each is connected to alternate dimensions which have the same physical laws, are comparable in their constants (ie: physics, locations, species within them), and are all non-communicating with each other without his influence. These portals work by breaking up the molecules of someone on one side before reassembling them on the other side, and if the traveler’s biological processes were to stop mid travel, they would die.

Angstrom has used them in a variety of ways, both to travel himself and in combat with others. He’s used them to summon his allies to his side, send enemies to dangerous areas in other locations, strand them in universes they’ll be trapped in, and disorient them mid-fight. Some of the more notable locations they’ve led to include:

Expanded Brain

After the accident went wrong, Angstrom ended up merging his consciousness with hundreds of other versions of himself. While this did lead to his brain mass expanding by 80% and him getting uncontrollable bouts of insanity, it does come with some other perks. Particularly, it allows him access to the many memories of the alternate versions of himself who were present in the accident, allowing him knowledge of the wider multiverse and the places he can travel to. It also boosted his intelligence to be on par with geniuses like Robot.

Guarding the Globe Abilities

As a playable unit in this game, Angstrom has several abilities which he can use during battles.

  • Blast From The Past - Angstrom opens a portal next to the opponent with the lowest HP, from which a T-Rex will briefly emerge to chomp at them while decreasing their defense by 25% for 6 seconds
  • Twinspiration - If paired with the Mauler Twins, he can increase their charging speed for abilities by 5%
  • Protected By The Levy - At the beginning of a wave, he’ll apply a random buff to his team, increasing that statistic by 12% for 10 seconds
  • End Them - When using Blast From The Past, this adds a damage over time debuff for 5 seconds and reduces the target’s ability cooldown by 50%. If the target is below 7% HP, then they will be instantly killed.

The Spot

Spots

Spot’s ability to traverse wherever he goes. The source of energy his portal emits resides from another dimension filled with polka dots that lead to other realities and possess its own gravity to move through, and which were made to be a duplicate of Cloak whose energy resides in another dimension. Jonathan's spots defy physics as they can suspend in mid air and traverse one spot to another no matter how far he wants to travel. He can use the Spots on his body to phase punches into him (including his head), along with other projectiles.

He’s also used their teleportation more offensively, to remove enemies from a fight and leave them directly in deadly situations. His spots can also function as a platform to stand on, along with using them to restrict the target's movements. Finally, his spots allow him to view events across the multiverse, as they “expand his power”. Somewhat important thing to mention is in the Spider-Verse movies, Spot’s portals seem to be more limited in the way that he can run out of them and need to make more spots.

Teleportation

Spot is capable of disappearing physically and appearing elsewhere, which let him escape a nerve attack from Invisible Woman. This seems to work by way of merging all his spots into one.

Limb Creation

After an experiment from Coyote, a villain who had gone through similar experiments to him, Spot gained the ability to cause extra sets of arms to sprout from his spots, typically used to grapple enemies from all over.

Resurrection (See Before The Verdict)

Spot is capable of reconstructing himself with the aid of the spotted dimension, which proved quite useful for him after he got ripped to pieces by Carnage. This could potentially act as an explanation for him returning after dying in a few other cases, such as getting his neck broken by Tombstone and getting reduced to a puddle as a result of Coyote experimenting on him.

Contest of Champions Abilities

In this game, Spot acts as a playable fighter. His main mechanic is in his Spots, which he has a 20% chance to gain whenever he’s hit, and which he can store up to ten. Once a fight when he hits 10 spots, he’ll double the effectiveness of all his Rupture attacks.  If he’s hit while recovering from using one of his special moves, he loses 1 Spot and cannot gain new ones for 4 seconds.

  • Untouchable - When he’s at over 5 spots, he can activate the Untouchable status, which causes all attacks aimed at him to miss for 5 seconds. Missed attacks also can cause damage to the opponent via a rupture effect. This buff is paused if Spot attacks, but his attacks also inflict the Infuriate status effect, which reduces their accuracy for two seconds. However, if Spot is hit while the buff is paused, he’ll receive more damage.
  • Portal Block - While blocking, he can make a portal to the Spotted Dimension. While he will be locked in place, any attack that’s blocked by the portal will give him 1 Spot. When he’s at over 5 Spots, this ability has a 20% chance to absorb attacks that are normally unblockable.
  • Signature Ability: From the Spotted Dimension - After a Portal Block ends, each hit Spot does on an opponent will deal extra Rupture damage for each spot he absorbed with Portal Block. While Untouchable, any attack that hits the opponent while they’re performing a heavy attack or recovering from a special attack’s use will grant Spot an attack buff for 7 seconds.
  • Special Attack 1: Extradimensional Shortcut - When activated, makes Spot immune to all incoming debuffs for 10 seconds. Whenever someone attempts to apply a debuff, they’ll be damaged via a rupture effect.
  • Special Attack 2: High Speed Matter Transfer - When activated, deals a burst of damage for each time an opponent has been hit with one of Spot’s ruptures. If he’s Untouchable while it’s activated, he also reduces the opponent’s resistance to physical attacks.
  • Special Attack 3 – Spotted Dimension Getaway - He’ll suck the opponent into his dimension for a massively damaging beatdown. This can also grant him max spots when used.

Future Fight Abilities

Spot acts as a playable unit in this game, granting him multiple passive and active abilities for use in battles.

  • Teleportation - Him and his allies gain a bonus to dodge rate and critical hit rate
  • The Untouchable - Increases Spot’s dodge rate and reduces opponent’s dodge rate.
  • Confidence Surge - Increases chain hit damage when attacking, dodge rate, skill damage, and bonus damage.
  • Spot Rush - A physical attack which can stun enemies for 2 seconds
  • Surprise Punch - A multihit punch which can stun enemies for 3 seconds.
  • Spot World - A counterattack which can stun enemies for 1 second while recovering 35% of Spot’s health, granting damage immunity for 5 seconds, penetrating defense buffs, and lets him build up attacking buffs.
  • Punching Bag - A physical attack which can decrease an enemy’s defenses while granting him attacking buffs and immunity to damage for 4 seconds.
  • Unstoppable Spot - Removes buffs from opponents while making Spot invincible and buffing his attack strength for 5 seconds.
  • Spotted Dimension - Attacks all enemies, while applying burn and poison damage for 3 seconds. When used, gives Spot a buff to his critical rate & damage, accuracy, penetration of defensive buffs, attacking strength, defense, and makes him invincible for 8 seconds.

Scaling

Angstrom Levy

Overview

Angstrom is in a bit of a weird spot within Invincible when it comes to scaling, as his main interactions have entirely been against the titular hero, who will get a section later discussing him due to that situation being more complicated. However, we do actually get a way of scaling Angstrom to characters besides him thanks to the very accident that gave him his powers. This explosion was also one that was in range of the Mauler Twins, and this ended up killing one of them while leaving the other in critical condition which he only survived due to the dead one shielding him. Angstrom was at the center of this same explosion, and yet he was relatively fine in comparison. And this was him just as a human, not after he got his cybernetic upgrades, which means this is a level he should upscale. This gives him a pretty good opportunity to scale to a lot of the feats done by the other heroes of the Invincible world.

The Guardians of the Globe

The Mauler Twins rather notably were implied to have directly kept pace many times with the original Guardians of the Globe, who were noted to be some of the strongest heroes in the world, and whose later replacements had to put in work to be as effective. Angstrom also was able to keep up with Bulletproof, giving him a more direct chain of scaling to the more modern team.

Other Heroes & Villains

Given Angstrom can generally be placed as on par with the Guardians, that also gives him a good way to broadly scale to a lot of the other feats done by the lesser heroes and villains of Invincible's universe through various scaling chains.

The Viltrumites (Debatable)

While Angstrom has had multiple encounters with , it is pretty clearly established that he is not a threat on par with him at his best, as will be discussed Before the Verdict. But while he’s got nothing on a serious Viltrumite, the fact Mark has consistently been pressed to take Angstrom seriously in itself shows Angstrom is likely above the level of power Mark uses in his more casual fights, so it should be somewhat fair to scale Angstrom to casual feats done by him and other Viltrumites.

The Spot

Overview

The Spot is a bit more simple to discuss here, as despite his goofiness, he unquestionably has shown himself to be on par with many of the street tier threats seen throughout Marvel. So this means he should scale to a lot of the big feats for the lower tiers of Marvel.

Spider-Man

Goofy as Spot is, there is a decent argument for him comparing to Peter. He was able to beat him a few times-even during his premiere as a character, and his fighting style allows him to keep up speed wise-often reflecting their attacks back with his portals. As for strength, that’s a bit more arguable but he has had some moments which could imply he can compete with a serious Peter. And, well, him being such a powerhouse in other media, particularly the Spider-Verse films, gives him a far more solid way of comparing him to the webhead.

The Spider Society

Being able to keep up with Spider-Man means he also can scale to various other Spider-Men, as the multiple Spider-Verse events have shown that the multiverse’s many versions of the webhead are on par with each other. We can also see this with some of the other versions of Spot which are being included here, particularly Into the Spiderverse, where Spot kept pace with 4 alternate Spider-Men that are on par with a lot of the other members of the society of the film, the roster of which also has a lot of overlap with the crossovers in the comics.

Other Marvel Heroes

Spot’s not just taken on Spidey, as he has had multiple other encounters with the various other heroes patrolling the streets of Marvel. This gives him a good way to broadly scale to a lot of the feats done by the lower tier heroes of the Marvel Universe.

Weaknesses

Angstrom Levy

Angstrom is… not all there mentally to put it lightly. He went insane after the incident with Invincible and despite still being able to come up with great plans, he still isn’t put together as a person, and his hate could cloud his judgement. He also has limitations with his portals, as they can only go to different universes, not different locations. This means any portal he opens will lead to that same location in other universes, so he can’t circumvent actually travelling to locations, and he has to have some knowledge of said other dimension to accurately exploit them in battle. He also doesn’t have an easy way of judging what’s going on in the other side of these portals, which has led to enemies using them to get the chance to get the drop on him.

The Spot

While Ohnn does have a massive amount of potential with his abilities, due to insanity and a generally inconsistent level of competence, his actual track record when fighting heroes can be a bit… spotty. Speaking of Spots, Ohnn has a limited amount of them to use, for both his movie and comic appearances. While he does learn to not spam them as much, it still is an issue and how Spidey has defeated him before. If he were to be drained of his spots through something like absorption, he would be left powerless.

General Discussion on Invincible Scaling

While scaling most of the Viltrumites and those on par with them to a lot of the feats of the Invincible is relatively easy, there is a lot of ambiguity and messiness when it comes to scaling the lower tier characters. This won’t be covering every single case since that would be a lot to cover along with being a bit repetitive, this is just focusing on the big arguments which are relevant for Angstrom specifically. Though before moving on, I will note a specific quote from Robert Kirkman on this topic. In this video, while debunking a common fan theory, Kirkman makes a direct comment indicating he doesn’t like the idea of power scaling, and that he’s of the mind that writing characters as if they’re strictly stronger or weaker than each other is limiting. While this is a fair stance, some people have used this as a way of debunking the idea of there even being specific tiers in Invincible, and that’s just not true. It is a major and consistent plot point that Viltrumites are a scale above most other heroes in the universe, and to just ignore that would be rather disingenuous. This comment is just discussing that, when writing a story, the idea of power scaling is far from a major concern, not that power scaling the series at all is impossible. So it’s effectively no different from a certain other quote by Stan Lee which has been used similarly.

Can Angstrom fully scale to Invincible?

Short Answer: No lol

Long Answer: For Angstrom himself, there are a few moments of discussion with his interactions with the titular hero where you could argue he should scale to Mark’s full strength, but these don’t really stand up to much scrutiny. First off, his first fight is very clearly indicating he was originally weaker than him. While he does somewhat stagger Invincible at first, it’s clearly only because of Mark subconsciously holding back, and when he stops doing that he just completely crushes Angstrom. The more complicated case is their second major fight during the Invincible War. In this fight, Angstrom does show himself to be able to harm and knock back Invincible at a few points, which is certainly impressive. However, the big thing here is that Mark was both exhausted from dealing with the war, and was initially holding back in this fight. The seconds he starts pushing through with effort, Invincible pretty clearly manages to start winning, ultimately forcing Angstrom into retreating. Finally, there’s his last confrontation where he ends up capturing Atom Eve, directly by way of overpowering her. However, at the time Eve was actively trying not to use her powers due to being pregnant, something Angstrom even directly figures out, so no this isn’t an instance of him overpowering a Viltrumite tier either.

There’s also the question of if he can potentially scale to the faster flight speeds of the Vilrumites, considering how he’s been able to directly react to Mark’s flight, but that’s also hard to justify. His fights against Mark have entirely been on Earth where Mark physically can’t go to his top speeds, and a lot of the faster feats done by Viltrumites would logically require a lot of acceleration, which Mark would not be accomplishing in his fights with Angstrom where his flight is more in small bursts. Logically speaking, there’s no reason to assume Mark goes anywhere near his best speeds in his more grounded fights, so arguing the more grounded heroes should compare to them based on moments where they react to his speeds is fairly ludicrous.

OG Guardians Scaling

“WHERE IS HE?”

So the original Guardians of the Globe don’t have too much to really talk about scaling wise, besides just generally being treated as the strongest heroes of the world, but there are two major exceptions which could be used to give a bump in stats. The first and bigger example is the Immortal, who stays a major character in the rest of the series. Now for the most part his stats do stay in line with the other major characters used here, but it is notable that the guidebook has stated he’s potentially on par with a Viltrumite. This kind of makes him weird scaling wise, especially given his actual track record in the series doesn’t really support this, but this wouldn’t really be valid as a method to indirectly make everyone a Viltrumitie tier. While it’s not been directly stated, there’s been a pretty clear implication that Immortal gets stronger with his resurrections, as seen with his backstory scenes depicting him as just a normal man in his old lives before becoming a hero later, and how he went from getting easily killed by Omni-Man in one hit to being able to draw blood and keep up with casual/holding back Viltrumites. And it is worth noting that the two characters he’s compared to in the guidebook, Atom Eve and Allen, are themselves Viltrumite tier because they grow in strength with resurrection, so it would make sense to come to the conclusion this is how Immortal’s powers work as well.

The other major character worth talking about here is Red Rush, the team’s resident speedster. While he doesn’t have much more screentime than the rest of them, in the show he does manage to accomplish a few impressive speed feats in being able to run to stop crimes while in the middle of a date and saying he perceives even casual conversation as unbearably slow, both of which have been calculated to make him thousands of times faster than light. The issue here is that there’s not much of a reason to scale him to the characters in the tier we’re talking about. It’s pretty directly shown that even the other OG Guardians can’t scale to his speed, given that at multiple points in their fight with Omni-Man he was able to save them from Omni-Man’s attacks faster than they could react. This is actually why he ended up being Omni-Man’s first kill in the fight, and the fact that it took a guy who’s flown much faster than Rush to take him out is also demonstrating that this is a level of speed only Viltrumites can stack up to. There’s also a statement from the comic that Bulletproof is as fast as Red Rush, but the issue with applying that to this feat is that this is mixing information from two different continuities. Comic Red Rush doesn’t have the statements showing he’s this fast in the original version of this scene, and his stated speeds within the guidebook are far slower than this. Meanwhile, Show Bulletproof has no statements directly comparing him to Red Rush in speed like this. The only character who can scale to this is Omni-Man, but considering he had to put in some effort to take Red Rush out, there’s not much reason to use that to say the heroes of Earth should scale.

The Alternate Invincibles

A relatively under-discussed group of characters in Invincible blogs that have recently gotten more attention thanks to the show is the Alternate Invincibles. And there are two major topics of interest with them. First off, some have suggested that Angstrom could use them as backup to do an army fight. While I could envision this being a part of the animation and would work if you’re specifically looking at a match for them as a unit, for an Angstrom focused match I don’t feel that should be fair to include for the debate. The allyship between Angstrom and the Invincibles was a very short term one, as he sent them out once in an alliance specifically to deal with main Invincible, and this alliance was one that only lasted a matter of days before they betrayed each other and Angstrom dumped them in the Wasteland. Later events in the comics show it very definitely that this did not last, as after all but one of them died due to resorting to a party of the Donner variety, said surviving Invincible’s first move on seeing Angstrom again was attacking him and dragging him back to his home dimension to be tortured. So no, they’re definitely not gonna be willing to fight for him in any army battle.

Beyond that, there’s the argument that they scale to mainline Invincible, and as such the characters who defeated them are able to scale to Viltrumites. However, there’s not a whole lot in the series which directly indicates these alternate Invincibles are as strong as the original Invincible. For one thing, the show directly states as such, and this is backed up by the fact that multiple characters that Invincible is stronger than were able to kill them. It’s also mentioned that an alternate Omni-Man died to an attack that’s far below his planet busting peaks, so there is precedence to treat these alternate versions as weaker. You can also see this thematically, as the main Invincible we follow is the only one which rejected the Viltrumite empire and didn’t turn evil, meaning he’s the only Mark that had to actually fight against a lot of his more powerful threats. And the main universe is repeatedly treated as special for this fact, so it makes narrative sense to say they shouldn’t be broadly treated as if they’re all as strong as Invincible at his best. This is also going against the fact that at the time Mark was still far from his peak, and the only one of them that came back later was the one who kidnapped and tortured Angstrom, meaning using it as a way to scale Angstrom specifically to Mark’s planet busting maximum is fairly disingenuous.

That Guy

I refuse to have the umpteeneth discussion of Omnipotus here, as he has received far more attention than he deserves. Please see the last time someone debunked this fraud if you want our opinion because there is genuinely nothing else to be said about him.

Immeasurable Nolan?!?!?!

A new argument which has come up for Invincible stats came out due to the yet to be released fighting game, in which Omni-Man’s ultimate move seemingly involves him flying to the Flaxan dimension through sheer speed. Given his portrayal in the game was designed to depict him as relatively casual as he fights and it being a game where hypothetically any playable character can fight and defeat anyone, that could imply that the cast can scale to his Immeasurable speeds. However, there’s a lot of issues in using this. For one thing, this is a gameplay only feat which is actively contradictory to the original series, given it’s consistently only possible to go to the Flaxan dimension via portals, and there are no other instances of anyone in Invincible moving quite this fast. So even under soft-composite rules it’s hard to treat it as a reliable feat on its own merits.

It’s also really arguable to say that Angstrom should even scale to anything from the game at the moment. Not only has he not been shown to be a playable character, we don’t really have any idea what the story of the game is, and therefore there could be some kind of in-story justification for this moment or for everyone being able to fight each other which goes against it being usable. And that’s all without the obvious point of this being easy to write off as yet another case of a fighting game’s super just being a different location for the sake of the animation, rather than literally taking the fight to a different dimension in the moment.

Now of course this all could be subject to change in the future, given the game is currently unreleased and will be the newest piece of Invincible media we have right now. Especially given there have been interviews from Kirkman which suggest it may more directly tie into the main series in some manner. However, we’re not fortune tellers, and we’re not going to delay this blog for a year to wait and see the full context, so this is just going to be left unexplored.

The Spot

Herald Spot

It’s a blog about a Marvel/DC Character, so you know there’s inevitably going to be moments people have used to argue Spot is secretly a herald…

… yeah no lol. Spot very rarely deals with any heralds whatsoever and considering how he handles taking hits with Peter in the comics makes any attempt at any herald shenanigans be unlikely to get a good argument for. The one big case of this would be in an encounter with Captain Marvel, where he was able to draw blood from her with his punches and even survived a blast made by her. However, beyond the fact that Carol is a herald with a canonically inconsistent power level due to her powers being based around energy absorption, in this case Carol was actively pretending to be powerless due to being in on a plan to get a criminal to confess to crimes while she was seemingly helpless. So there’s very little reason to actually say he’s herald tier from this moment.

Where’s Spot’s Reactor Core form?

In Across the Spiderverse, Spot’s big plan was to power himself up with a reactor core to extract revenge against Miles. While this is absolutely Spot’s peak and from what we gathered IS his current form right now within the films, the issue is that his capabilities within it are far too vague at the moment to really hinge much on it. And considering it’s already something which would require significant buildup to even access, we feel it’s not really fair to bring it up for this debate in the first place.

Planet Level Animated Spot

A surprisingly powerful source which was included here is the Spot from the Spiderman Animated Series, who despite being in only one episode does manage to have some fairly strong direct feats. But the big source that probably popped out was his Spots potentially being planet level, which you can’t really scale him to. Not only was this something that took the entire episode to build up to, it’s explicitly a level of power beyond what Spot can normally do, as to undo it he needed to amp himself with another power source, and even then he still needed to sacrifice himself to actually seal it. So he definitely shouldn’t scale to it. Another note is that this Spot’s holes have been compared to black holes, but it’s specifically noted that they lack the gravity of an actual black hole, so you can’t do any durability feats from being near them.

60s Spider Man and Bolton Scaling

A relatively underdiscussed method of getting Spider-Men above FTL has been centered around the 1967 cartoon and one of its villains of the week, Bolton. This guy hails from Mars, starts the episode having created a lightning storm over New York while still on Mars, and was able to travel from Mars to Earth as one of his lightning bolts, with one later carrying him to the sun at the end of the episode. And Spider-Man pretty consistently was able to outpace these same lightning bolts throughout his confrontation with him. There is a weird anti-feat from the episode where Spidey got tagged by one of his lightning bolts which was said to take him to the moon, but Spidey was still able to accurately make a web line to a building while getting dragged by it, so it is only a minor knock against this scaling being valid for him. And Spidey can certainly scale to Bolton physically, as he was able to knock out Bolton and actively restrain him with his webbing to the point he needed assistance to escape. And while you could argue against them being full on dodging due to the show’s weird animation, Bolton implies he mentally controls the speed of the lightning while saying he couldn’t control the lightning bolt which Spidey dodged and which sent him to the sun. So that’s pretty directly demonstrating that Spidey’s faster.

However, the real questionable part of this comes from how we scale this to the other Spider-Men. Now to be fair, a 60s show inspired Spider-Man isn’t just a random background cameo in the Spider-Verse events. He had a pretty direct role in the original comic, with there being an entire issue featuring Miles and Ultimate Cartoon Peter mucking around in his world. And the 60s inspired characters who show up in these events are kind of huge jobbers, as the other Spider-people can consistently knock them out in one hit, with it even being established that they’re so weak in comparison to the other Spider-Men that they don’t even register as threats on their Spider-Senses, so if anything, the Spider-Men should massively upscale them, and by proxy this feat.

…if they could scale to it, that is.

The big fatal flaw with this scaling is that Spiderverse’s 60s Spider-Man is actually another alternate version of the webhead than the one from the cartoon. The one seen in the Spider-Verse comics officially hails from Earth 67, as opposed to the one actually in the cartoon, which officially takes place in Earth 6799. While you could definitely argue that both Spideys should be considered comparable regardless, as the differences between these universes are incredibly minor, we feel it’s safer to not include it.

Spot: He Who Comes Back

One power of Spot’s mentioned in his abilities section was his resurrection, which allowed him to come back from injuries as extreme as dismemberment. This ability has led Spider-Man to say that Spot “can’t die”, and that he’ll come back as he has done before. The problem? We don’t know how long this process takes. There has always been an indeterminate amount of time between his death and his return. Due to this, it’s unlikely that this could provide a viable method of returning to life for the debate.

Stats

Given the nature of both characters, stats are one of the most important parts of this entire debate. But who truly has the edge overall between these vengeful multiverse travelers? Well, let’s see.

For strength, Spot’s been pretty easily able to deal with Peter Parker and other Spider-Tiers, made all more apparent in Spider-Verse where he’s more than on par with the Spider-Society physically. This allows the Spot to scale to a plethora of town-city feats from his rivals, from Insomniac Miles’s electric absorption, Peter surviving a destruction of a mountain, and Wayeb’s electric attacks. All of which gets around mid kilotons-Megatons as well. The best the Spot can scale to however is Peter surviving a hit from Specter of the Manticore with an exajoule of energy, gaining around 249 Megatons and safely in the mountain ranges of power. Now, Peter only barely survived the hit, meaning Spot would be downscaling that fear a bit, but this is Spot’s maximum potential for AP.

As for Angstrom, his ability to keep up with casual Vitumites and lower tier heroes like Bulletproof give him a good way of scaling to plenty of feats in a similar range, where that be Black Samson’s suit being able to level cities, Conquest making a city sized shockwave, or Omni-Man surviving the Hammer. But several of the big feats for Invincible could easily surpass the scale of the webheads, like Omni-Man surviving being near a black hole, Invincible catching a meteor, and Dinosaurus tanking his bombs which turned Las Vegas to glass. Perhaps the strongest feat you could argue is the Meteor Twins surviving a meteor that vaporized everything within 5 miles of their location, which at best can hit 2.413 Teratons, and makes Angstrom over 9000 times stronger. Even without it, Dinosaurus’ bomb could hit 526.746 Gigatons, which would still put him at about 2000 times stronger. So Angstrom fairly comfortably held the edge in power.

As for speed, neither of these two had too much on their own, but inherently based on their fighting styles they both could comfortably compare to the big speed feats for each of their tiers. For Angstrom, that’ll be scaling to his rival Invincible moving to the moon, getting around 34% of the speed of light. Similar feats like Kurusk’s electric attacks, which plenty of characters have reacted to, get around the same level, putting Angstrom comfortably in the relativistic ranges. However, Spot had the edge in speed. While Angstrom caps at relativistic, Spot has been able to fight on par with Spider-Men, who are superior to street tiers like Wolverine, who can intercept Cyclops’s laser beams. This puts Spot around 1.49 times faster than light, making him comfortably 4 times faster than Angstrom does. Spot would also be upscaling this as well, given Spider Tiers are generally superior to Street Tiers in power and speed.

All in all, Angstrom held a clear edge in power, while Spot held a clear edge in speed.

Arsenal & Abilities

With both Angstrom and Spot having advantages in stats in opposite ends, their abilities and Arsenal matter most. Surprisingly, however, neither of them are too versatile on their own, mostly reliant on their portals and fisticups to score off a win.

For starters, let’s compare their Portals. Angstrom’s portals don't have a limit to how much he can. In comparison to Spot whose portals have been shown to run out when he uses too much of them. Spot also doesn’t have a way to gain back portals once he’s out so Angstrom waiting him out could work, even if not an in character option. Both can use their portals to maintain air time and use it to send the other to another world which keeps their teleportation abilities rather even in the output.

Spot does have the ability however to throw his portals and close it on a limb which could put an end to Angstrom if he aims for the head, along with his 4 times speed advantage and unorthodox teleportation fighting style it might be possible. Spot could score the win there, but unfortunately for him, this is not a significant enough speed edge to make it matter and is Spot’s ONLY method of dealing damage. What about Angstrom?

Well, luckily, Angstrom’s Drones are not only powerful enough to one shot him considering they can harm Invincible but they can also be used as surveillance to keep track of where Spot is at all times, especially since he has seemingly hundreds of them. They also can be cloaked and turn invisible making it even harder for Spot to… well Spot out then especially if they're coming at him from multiple angles which is more than enough to hit areas of his body that aren't covered in Spots, especially if he's unable to actively tell where they're coming from. Factor in the massive range these machines can be operated when Angstrom is in another dimension with just his mind alone allows him to keep his distance and overwhelm through numbers and observation.

Spot’s invincibility power ups aren’t likely to help as well. It’s unlikely Spot would know he’s dying in a single hit, meaning he needs to actively activate them before he gets hit and it only lasts 5 seconds. With Angstrom at full force with drones that are beyond what Spot can tank, it’s unlikely that Spot will be able to make the most out of it.

While waiting in another dimension might not be a go to option for Angstrom, considering that the drones can cover Spot’s entire body, Spot has effectively no defense against them and will be completely swarmed eventually. The sheer range the cameras have is a far more potent wincon than Spot closing off a portal, something he doesn’t do often. All Angstrom needs is to hit Spot one time, and thanks to having the only option for combat that isn’t portals or fist fighting and said versatility of said option, this will allow Angstron to take the win.

To put it simply, while Spot has a wincon with portal closing, its quite specific in comparison to being hit once, and he cannot easily avoid Angstrom’s drones which act as area of effect. It’s one wincon vs several, and Spot’s speed edge isn’t significant enough to make that one wincon happen. Angstrom takes this category.

Tertiary Factors

Admittedly this isn’t one of the most important parts of this entire fight, given their win conditions, but it’s good to mention some advantages and disadvantages to them. They are scientists after all, and each of them are definitely smarter than your average human. That being said, Angstrom’s way more willing to plan ahead and has come up with much more proper schemes than the Spot. The entire Invincible War, his way to bait Mark to fight him, all thought of and generally accomplished well, whereas Spot doesn’t exactly do much planning ahead. He’s still plenty smart-being able to figure out how he can make more spots quickly, but Angstrom’s a much better battle planner than Spot is.

Skill however, is firmly on Spot’s court. Angstrom’s fighting style is notably a lot simpler than Spot, especially up close, where Spot’s strategy of reflecting attacks would make that practically a non-option for Angstrom. While Angstrom can hold his own against people like Mark, the times Mark fought him generally aren’t big showcases of skill in general by comparison to Spot. Spot’s more experience in active combat also helps more against Angstrom overall, as he’s had a lot more time as a villain and tends to be more willing to start a fight.

And to make this quick, despite Angstrom’s lack of sanity overall, this doesn’t really impact him much in a fight, especially against a target who isn’t his archenemy. Same applies to Spot, just not to as extreme of an extent. It’s an interesting topic overall, but Angstrom is a better planner and smarter overall, while Spot’s a better fighter skill wise and has better experience.

Conclusion

“This world is in ruins, this Invincible's reputation is destroyed. The people here will always hate and fear him because of what you've done. Good.”

Advantages:

  • Much stronger as a whole

  • Orbs offer better battlefield control and act as the only non-portal option both have

  • Said orbs can swarm Spot’s body, countering any reflection shenanigans

  • Has no limit to how many portals he can create

  • Generally a smarter long term planner

  • Interdimensional hater

  • Sterling K. Brown

Equal:

  • Neither could use their portals to BFR the other for good

Disadvantages:

  • Slower

  • Most of his arsenal can be redirected

  • Less skilled and experienced

  • Would be vulnerable to getting beheaded

While this fight was simple on paper, what’s on it can change the tide of the fight at any point. Spot could definitely score the win in a few situations with his speed edge… if it was to where Angstrom is a statue by comparison. Unfortunately for Ohnn, Spot’s speed edge isn’t enough for him to take the win. While a 4x speed sounds notable, it isn’t to blitzing ranges at all, and Spot lacks area of effect like Angstrom does to win. Compare this to a thousand times strength gap in Angstrom’s court, where any attack on Spot will be instantly fatal. While Spot can reflect Angstrom’s fists, Angstrom’s drones counter any reflection shenanigans by swarming Spot’s entire body, making sure that one of them will hit and kill Spot.

Angstrom is the only person with options beyond their portals, and this one option is not only a go-to option, but an insanely potent wincon that Spot has little defenses against. Couple that with Angstrom being smarter as a whole, has no limitations on his portals, and Spot only having one specific win condition, and it’s only a matter of time before Spot goes down. While Ohnn has proven himself to be more than just a villain for the week, Angstrom’s overwhelming power, better options for combat, and ingenious mind allows him to put a X under this Spot.

The winner is Angstrom Levy.

Stats

Stats are the meat of this debate, and spell out a clear advantage for each combatant. Starting with attack potency and durability, this one doesn’t favor John.  Angstrom gets pretty high in this category. He should comfortably scale to a good number of the heroes and villains that aren’t from Viltrum. This includes Dinosaurus, who could withstand an explosion that destroyed Vegas, which gets 546.548 Megatons on average and 526.746 Gigatons at best. There’s also the comet twins surviving a meteor that devastated everything in a 5 mile range, which could maybe get 2.413 Teratons, but this is an absolute high ball that takes the wording of the description completely seriously, so it's a fair bit shakier. Spot at his absolute best could downscale 616 Peter Parker, who is capable of withstanding an exajoule’s worth of power, which gets 249 Megatons. This is a high end, as Peter was barely able to take this, and the value that Spot would get from this is even lower, as it has been proven time and time again that Peter is physically superior to Ohnn.

Speed is where the scales start to tip. For a man of his brain power, in this battle, Angstrom’s thinking (and moving) is a bit too slow. Through scaling to lower tier villains like Kursk, whose electricity moves at 60000 miles per second, Angstrom would get to speeds of 32.2 percent the speed of light. This is fairly consistent with the titular Invincible, who flew to the moon, where he was moving as fast as 34.34 percent the speed of light. Spot, through scaling to the Spider-Men, would reach speeds of 63.16 percent the speed of the light. This seems low at first, but then we scale Spot to other street tier heroes. Spot should be comparable to Wolverine, who was capable of deflecting an optic blast from Cyclops. This puts Spot at 1.49 times the speed of light.

In the end, Angstrom takes strength and Spot takes speed, both of which are crucial for their respective chances.

Arsenal & Abilities

There are a few key comparisons and contrasts to draw in this area of the fight, as these two have very different applications of the tools at their disposal.

Starting with their portals, Angstrom holds a notable edge in this category, as his portals do not have a defined limit to how many can be created at a time. While this initially seems game changing, there is one crucial advantage that lies in Spot’s court: His portals can cause damage with their closing. When Spot closes one of his, the matter that is caught between the ends of the portal is cut clean through, which he used to take off the Winter Soldier’s arm. While Angstrom can do something similar, it is not something he does offensively, and would be unlikely to exploit before Spot does so first when coupled with the speed discrepancy.

Beyond their portals, Angstrom has a larger arsenal as a whole, with his drones serving as one of his best forms of attack. If he were to catch Spot in a swarm, it would seem like a perfect opportunity for his victory. There’s just one problem, and it’s damning for Levy: Spot doesn’t need to create a portal to escape a bad situation. If he needs a quick solo escape, Spot can bring all of his spots together and simply teleport out of whatever could be surrounding him. Essentially, for the drones to prevail as a win condition, Angstrom would have to overcome the gap in speed and mobility that Spot holds, whereas Spot can just put Angstrom in one of the spots and close it for an easy victory, as his speed advantage, while not in the blitzing range, would still allow for this approach.

Finally, we have the abilities from their respective games. On average, Spot’s abilities from things like Contest Of Champions and Future Fight see more use in this fight than Angstrom’s from Guarding The Globe. Several of Angstrom’s abilities are either too slow to hit Spot, like Blast From The Past, or build upon an advantage in a way that is ultimately redundant, like the Burger Mart Burger or Damien Darkblood’s notes. Meanwhile, Spot has access to Untouchable, causing all attacks that would hit him normally to miss, granting further workarounds to Angstrom attempting to overwhelm him with the drones.

In the end, Arsenal and Abilities go to Spot.

Tertiary Factors

While not as game changing as the previous two categories, there are still a good number of aspects to this battle that fit in here.

First is intelligence. Given that the two of them are both scientists, they’re a bit above average, with Angstrom slightly coming out on top. Angstrom is a very good planner, with the Invincible War and his crusade against Mark being proof of this. The issue for him is that this isn’t something he can capitalize on, as his planning is significantly more long term, which would be of much less assistance in a battle such as this.

Next is experience, with Spot emerging in the lead. Despite the combined knowledge of his many selves across the multiverse, Angstrom really hasn't been fighting as long as Johnny. Spot has been in the game for years, fighting a wide assortment of heroes and a few villains.

When it comes to their fighting styles and how their skills match up, Spot’s got this in spades. His fighting style of redirection and teleportation is one of a kind, with Angstrom not having gone up against something like this prior. While Spot is more used to physical brawlers, Angstrom’s fighting style would be a much easier adjustment to him than vice versa. This gives him an even greater edge in the use of his wincon, as Angstrom would struggle to plan for an unknown like Spot.

In the end, these too would also fall into Spot’s hand.

Conclusion

“This is going to be good for us Spider-Man. You and me are going to live up to our potential. You'll finally have a villain worth fighting for, and I won't be JUST A JOKE TO YOU!”

Advantages:

  • Faster

  • Far more experienced and skilled

  • Teleportation allows for greater mobility

  • Could potentially kill Angstrom by cutting through him with a portal closing

  • Across the Spiderverse

  • Creased Miles’ Jays

Equal:

  • Neither could use their portals to BFR the other for good

Disadvantages:

While the gap in power seems like a massive edge for Angstrom, Spot has enough to work around this. Angstrom may not seem motionless to him, but the 4.3x speed boost in Spot’s favor allows him to evade the drones much easier than it is for Angstrom to steer clear of the spots. The moment he’s caught in one, all Spot needs to do is close the portal to close out the fight.

The drones at Angstrom’s disposal are also way less helpful than they might seem. Individual drones would be countered with little effort, and swarms could be dodged by Spot due to his teleportation and aforementioned speed edge. Combine this with his inferior portal usage and lackluster backing equipment, and Angstrom would struggle to find a window to take advantage of his superior strength and numbers.

Despite his incredible intelligence, Angstrom is up against the unknown, while Spot has done fights like this plenty of times. Spot’s teleportation approach to combat is something Angstrom has never seen, much less fought before, and adaptation on the fly would hinder his own style while trying to develop a counter. Spot, however, is in his element in this fight, as evading physical attacks and utilizing his spots to attack is his bread and butter.

Angstrom may have head strength in numbers, but Spot’s speed, experience, skill and body-slicing portals let him take this all on his Ohnn, finally A. Levy-ating Angstrom of his hatred. Permanently.

The winner is The Spot.
