Korra vs Rey (Avatar vs Star Wars) VS Prediction Blog

“To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often.”  - Winston Churchill

Korra, the new Avatar of Republic City
Rey, the last Jedi master of the Resistance

There are many tales people have told about legendary heroes. But just as worthy of respect are the ones who are tasked with succeeding their legends. From humble roots, these two women were thrust into roles of great importance in the wake of the heroes of their past, with many expectations being brought against them from both within and outside their stories. But thanks to their inner strengths, they ultimately were able to grow into heroes of legend in their own right, ending the struggles that had haunted their predecessors and bringing hope to those they grew to belong with.

Before We Begin

For Korra, this will be discussing all the main canon information for Avatar. This includes both original cartoons, the comics, the books, canon adjacent games, and any other official media. There will not be any scaling to alternate continuities such as the Chibi shorts or the live action adaptations, nor will this include scaling from her appearances in crossovers such as Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl or Fortnite.

As for Rey, since she is original to the newer Disney led canon of Star Wars, this will not be including any information exclusive to the original Legends continuity, as she as a character does not exist within it. Beyond that, all media that is part of the canon will be on the table, including the movies, comics, books, animated series, canon adjacent games, and anything else that’s relevant. And like Korra, this will not include any scaling to crossovers such as Disney Infinity.

Background

Korra

“I've realized that even though we should learn from those who came before us, we must also forge our own path.”

Water. Earth. Fire. Air. Long ago, these four nations lived together in harmony. Then, everything changed when the fire nation attacked. Led by the Fire Lord Sozin, the fire benders of this nation would attempt to conquer the world, massacring the Air Nation and putting the world into a hundred year war for independence. Only the Avatar, the one bender who could wield all 4 elements, could stop him, but when the world needed him most, he vanished. A century later, a young airbender named Aang would end up being uncovered in the south, having frozen himself for a century due to being the Avatar. He’d then go on a journey, making many friends and allies along the way, and eventually he’d end up stopping the then current Fire Lord Ozai, saving the world from the tyranny of his rule and bringing it into a new age of peace. But the Avatar is not just one person, it’s a cycle, and when Aang’s time eventually passed, people around the world were looking to the next Avatar for what they’d accomplish. This successor would be a rambunctious young girl who quickly took to her birthright, a girl from the Water Tribe known as Korra

Korra initially spent much of her life sheltered from the world with trainers, to keep her safe and make sure she was ready for the burdens of the role. But Korra would end up growing up to want to leave, leading to her stowing away on a ship headed for Republic City, a city inhabited by all 4 nations. She’d train under the airbender master Tenzin, and would end up making friends with some of the locals, those being the brothers Mako and Bolin, and Asami Sato, the heir to a wealthy family. But things would quickly go sour as a contingent of non-benders led by the mysterious Amon known as the equalists would stage an uprising, forcing Korra to defend her new home. While she did manage to stop this uprising, she’d end up shaken from a case of nearly losing her bending for good, only being saved by her past self.

She’d then end up in the middle of a civil war between her father’s water tribe and a rival group led by her uncle, Unalaq. He’d end up summoning forth the dark spirit Vaatu, who had been a rival that was sealed within the Spirit World by the first Avatar many years ago. This foe was almost too much to handle, as their first fight would end with Korra losing access to the memories of her past selves. But thanks to summoning the power of Raava, the spirit who had started the cycle, she’d manage to banish this foe once and for all. Though this failure still weighed on her, and after a fight with the leader of anarchist benders known as Zaheer ended with her almost dying, she’d lose a lot of faith in herself.

She’d end up going on her own journey for several years, hoping to find herself once again. After some spiritual guidance from former foes and some literal guidance from a woman who had once helped her past life, she’d end up regaining some faith in herself. This was good, as right on the horizon was a new invasion of Republic City, led by Kuviara and her metal bent giant robot. It took all the help of her allies, but she’d eventually manage to stop this invasion and bring the city to peace once again. While the future of the world has yet to be seen, there’s no doubt Korra played a major role in ensuring the future would be one her own successor could maintain the balance in.

Rey

“If there's one thing I'm beginning to learn, it's that you can't dwell on changing the past. Concentrate on the present. Work with what you have.”

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, the Empire ruled over with an iron fist. Led by the evil Emperor Palpatine and his cyborg enforcer Darth Vader, many in the galaxy suffered under their rule. But eventually a hero would rise against the Empire, that being a young man on the desert planet of Tatooine known as Luke Skywalker. He’d end up wrapped up in the rebellion, and after learning of his father being a Jedi Knight, he’d begin the path to become a Jedi himself. He’d ultimately manage to end the tyranny of the Emperor and redeem Darth Vader, bringing peace to the galaxy at large. But this peace would not last forever. From the ashes of the Empire, the First Order rose, spearheaded by the mysterious dark lord Kylo Ren. The Resistance would rise to fight them, but due to Luke Skywalker having vanished, they’d have a tough time. That is, until their most skilled pilot, Poe Dameron, found a clue that led to the desert world of Jakku, and after being captured by the First Order, he’d send his droid, BB-8, to find a way to bring it back to the Resistance. The droid would then end up stumbling upon a simple scavenger, who as it turned out was destined for greatness. Her name was Rey.

Rey had been living alone on the planet of Jakku for most of her life, as her parents had left her on the planet as a child for reasons unknown. After finding BB-8, she’d quickly end up getting caught up in the Resistance’s fight, along with a defector from their ranks by the name of Finn. They’d manage to escape Jakku after taking a ship known as the Millennium Falcon, and after stumbling on its old owners, she’d end up in a bar where she grasped the lightsaber of the Skywalker family, which triggered something within her. While she ended up being captured by Kylo Ren’s forces and being brought to a First Order base known as the Starkiller, she’d end up meeting with Kylo Ren, which led to her recognising her strength as a wielder of the Force. After managing to escape from the base, she’d return to the Resistance, before taking the Falcon and flying into the cosmos to find Luke Skywalker to bring him back into the fight.

However, when Rey found Luke, he was far from willing to help. As it turned out, Kylo Ren was a former student of his in the Force, but after Luke sensed the darkness in his future, Kylo ended up coming to blows with him, inadvertently starting his journey to the dark side, and that was the true reason he hid himself. Rey would receive some training from him, but was unable to sway his opinion, leading to her attempting to go to Kylo herself to bring him back to the light. While this ultimately didn’t work, this example did end up inspiring Luke to make up for his mistake, as he would come to the Resistance in their darkest hour and sacrifice his life to give them the chance to fight for peace once again. Now more knowledgeable in the Force, Rey would fight alongside the Resistance in their fight with the First Order.

But then the dead spoke, as somehow the thought to be dead Emperor Palpatine had returned. Rey would journey to find his location and take him down, during which she discovered that she had some Sith potential. Kylo Ren would manage to expose that her parents were actually descendants of Palpatine, who had left her on Jakku for her protection. While this was a shock to her, she’d end up deciding to make a stand against the Sith lord, alongside a Kylo Ren who had finally managed to see the light. While it was a hard fought battle, the two would end up defeating the Sith lord, though Kylo did end up losing his life in the process. With the galaxy at peace once again, Rey Skywalker would look to the future, prepared to ensure the Jedi Order would live on to keep the galaxy safe.

Intelligence & Skill

Korra

Korra rather famously has shown a very natural aptitude for bending, being able to bend 3 of the 4 elements from a very young age. She’s been trained in the art by some of the best benders of her age, including Katara and Toph, whom had previously helped the previous Avatar on his own journey, and she’s managed to learn how to utilize more esoteric bending techniques like healing, Spirit Bending and Metal Bending. She’s been able to take on plenty of foes, including leaders of armies that quickly took over Republic City like Amon and Kuvira, the feared anarchist benders known as the Red Lotus, and Vaatu, the spirit of darkness who existed for millenia. She’s also skilled in combat, being able to beat groups of enemies on her own, sometimes without using bending and just her martial art skills, and she’s pushed through everything from exhaustion to mercury poisoning to fight for her friends.

Rey

Rey has shown herself to be a fairly intelligent scavenger, as she lived on her own for much of her life on the brutal desert planet of Jakku, which forced to learn all her skills herself. She’s a pretty good engineer, being able to make repairs to starships quickly, jury rig a working flight simulator out of starship parts, and even fix the Skywalker lightsaber after it was split in half. She’s also a skilled pilot, able to make complex maneuvers through treacherous terrain and quickly adapt to the controls of other ships. As a fighter, despite not being trained in the use of it at first, Rey was initially able to keep up with Kylo Ren, managing to keep up with him in their first battle on the Starkiller, and she was able to successfully use the force on a stormtrooper within minutes of learning the technique from Kylo’s mind. She only grew more skilled after some training from Luke Skywalker, keeping pace with Kylo in battle many more times and becoming a crucial member of the Resistance’s fight against the First Order. And, thanks to unlocking the power of the force, she was able to channel the rare Force power known as Oneness in order to defeat Darth Sidious, the strongest Sith Lord in history.

Equipment

Korra

Glider Staff

After unlocking airbending, Korra learned to use a staff with a retractable glider to help aid her techniques. She can use it to fly around, as well as channel wind into blowing at foes.

Rey

Quarterstaff

Rey’s main weapon of choice before her adventure started, this is, well, a metal stick she uses to smack things with. She has shown a decent amount of skill with it, whether it be using the Force to toss it like a projectile or spin around in place, and she’s shown enough skill to use it to disarm foes and spring off obstacles. Though she did later take her original staff apart to help assemble her lightsaber, and as such she doesn’t still have access to it now. It’s just such an iconic part of her arsenal that I felt it should get a section regardless.

Lightsaber

Speaking of which, no aspiring Jedi is complete without their own iconic lightsaber, and while Rey originally had to  utilize lightsabers originally created by Luke and Leia, by the end of her story she ended up creating one of her own. Created from various salvaged materials, including her old weapon of choice, a quarterstaff, this lightsaber does have a distinct look compared to the more classical ones assembled in the age of the Jedi, most notably in being activated by turning it's outside rather than using a button, and having a yellow color for it’s beam rather than the blues or greens traditionally used by the Jedi, but it’s still just as capable of battle.

Lightsabers consist of 5 main parts. The power cell, the casing, the focusing lens, the emitter and, of course, the kyber crystal at the center. The kyber crystal is a rare Force-attuned crystal which acts as its power source, which Rey personally repaired with the Force. When activated, the lightsaber emits a beam of pure plasma that some have estimated to be about 180 times hotter than the surface of a star, and as such they can be used freely underwater and can cut through practically anything which isn’t specifically resistant to that level of heat.

Lightsaber combat also is divided into various fighting styles, which all have their own strengths and drawbacks. Rey specifically doesn’t seem to be locked down to a specific style, thanks to her being trained through a combination of old Jedi texts, her old weapon of choice in the quarterstaff, and experience against Kylo Ren, who himself doesn’t really seem to be locked down to a specific style. If I were to extrapolate, given her most notable training was by Luke and Leia, it’s likely her style leans closest to their style, Form V. Also known as Shien and Djem So, this is a form which is based on blocking blows before immediately countering with strong counterattacks and ripostes, letting the wielder instantly shift from the defensive and win battles quickly through an overwhelming offensive.

NN-14 Blaster Pistol

Originally gifted to her by Han Solo, this laser pistol is her ranged weapon of choice, and despite its size it can still pack a punch. The blaster has been shown to be strong enough to blast through walls and take down speeders, and it’s able to launch lower damaging stun shots that knock people out. Other models of the blaster have been shown to fire consistent beams and rapid fire bursts, as well as blow through people’s chests.

Misc. Equipment

She’s also been shown to possess a face mask and goggles with a light attached, a rope for rappelling, a small curved knife, an emergency bio-injector which presumably has some medical purpose but we never see in use, and a pair of macro binoculars which can spot things from fifty kilometers away.

Abilities

Korra

Water Bending

Korra was born a water bender, so naturally this was the first element she learned to master, being trained under former ally to the Avatar Katara from a young age. Based on the fluid and adaptable martial art of Tai Chi, water bending is a form of bending which is rather versatile. Using this, Korra is able to create large waves, make tendrils over her arms to fight with, redirect attacks, create streams and large pillars, create breath bubbles to walk underwater, and launch herself out of bodies of water, as well as run on top of it

Water bending is not simply limited to bending in the form of liquid, as not only is she able to manipulate steam, she can also freely freeze the water into ice which she also has control over. She’s able to freeze objects in place, create platforms and walls, and fire them as sharp projectiles. One of her predecessors, Kyoshi, was even able to use it to freeze a man’s internal organs, instantly killing him. Finally, waterbenders are able to use their powers to heal wounds, which can include injuries as severe as broken bones and is something Korra can do on herself in a pinch

Earth Bending

The second bending style Korra learned to master, and while who she trained under before her journey is unknown, she did later get training from another former ally of Aang in Toph Beifong. Based on the southern Chinese martial art Hung Gar, which focuses on hard hitting attacks while remaining stable on the ground, earth bending is all about manipulating the earth and using it to fight foes. Korra is able to send out tremors in the earth to hit foes from below, rip out chunks of the earth to send flying, disorient foes by twisting them around, raise chunks from the ground to bind others in place, raise rocks to block attacks, lift platforms into the air, cause rocks to instantly shatter, redirect earth flying towards her, and create big shockwaves around her

Metal Bending

A sub-type of earth bending invented by Toph, and thanks to training from her daughter, Suyin Beifong, Korra became the first Avatar to master the use of it. By detecting the impure crude earth in metallic alloys, earth benders who know how to use the technique are able to bend metal as easily as any other earth, and can even use it to run up metal walls. After further training from Toph, Korra has shown enough skill to bend liquid metals and shift them into more solid forms, as well as bend a mercury poison that was in her body out of it. She’s also trained in using metal cables in combat, and can easily bend it to trap foes. Though it is worth establishing that metal benders cannot bend more purified metals, such as platinum

Fire Bending

The third bending style she mastered, which she was taught  in by Master Yim and was shown to have mastered it by the time of the series’ start. Based on the aggressive strikes of Northern Shaolin Kung Fu, firebending is the one bending style which can be freely generated, as it’s instead drawn from the chi reserves in the bender’s stomach. Korra tends to use it to create fire balls, walls of flames, and streams of fire, which she can unleash from any of her limbs, and even shoot out of her mouth like a dragon. She’s also shown the versatility to make small fire daggers for close quarters combat, make a small ring of fire to trap foes, generate fire shields to block water, propel herself through the air, and even just make stuff explode

Air Bending

The last of the 4 elements Korra learned to use, and while she’s not as skilled in its use as the other elements, she still has shown good proficiency thanks to teaching from Tenzin, an airbending master which his father Aang, the previous Avatar, trusted to teach the airbenders of the future. Based on the fluid and maneuverable martial art Ba Gua Zhang, Air Bending allows for attacking by firing powerful bursts of wind, as well as creating tornados and sucking air away from an area to suffocate foes. She can also create air scooters to zoom around on, cushions to protect her landings, shields to block attacks, and bubbles to breathe in toxic areas. She can also use wind to fly around with the aid of her staff

Spirit Bending

A variation of the water bender’s healing, spirit bending involves the manipulation of chi to cure, purify and balance corrupted or imbalanced Spirits and return them to the Spirit World. Korra used this throughout her story to help cure various corrupted spirits, most notably being able to use it to completely annihilate Unalaq & Vaatu in their final battle, as well as destroy Hundun, who was completely paralyzed as the technique was used on him. This is done by converting the energy of the cursed spirit into a different kind of energy which is no longer corrupted

Energy Bending

Originally used by ancient Lion Turtles which were the first to grant humans the use of bending, which Korra’s predecessor Aang would unlock and which Korra would end up utilizing to help recover the bending of those hurt by Amon’s Equalists after his spirit imparted the knowledge to her. More notably, energy bending has also been utilized to take away bending entirely, which Aang used to remove the bending of Ozai and Yakone. While Korra hasn’t used it herself, she has stated it is something she could do within the Avatar State. This process is noted to involve rewiring the target’s chi and could kill the target if they wanted to, but it is also risky in that a powerful enough soul could resist the process and kill the user in turn

Korra has also been shown to use this to free souls trapped in the Spirit World, astral project her spirit into the Spirit World, unlock and manifest her cosmic self while meditating within the Tree of Time, and deflect a cannon which fired spirit energy, which inadvertently created a portal into the Spirit World.

Resistances

Rey

The Force

Like other Jedi, Rey is able to tap into the Force, which is an energy field created by all life that binds everything in the universe together. The Force is in every person, but only those who possess a high quantity of midi-chlorians in their bodies can grow an attunement with it to use it to access various powers. These powers are tied to their mental states, requiring concentration to accomplish greater tasks, and thanks to the Force being everywhere, the range of abilities can get rather absurd, as more powerful Jedi and Sith are able to affect things from separate star systems entirely. Though it is worth noting that the use of this power is not limitless for its wielders, as overuse of the power can lead to exhaustion and even death. Thanks to her clone grandfather, the Senate, Rey has a naturally higher level of power when using them compared to an average force user, and as such was a natural adept in the use of the Force.

Telekinesis

The most iconic ability utilized by Force users is in its ability to move objects with their minds. This can be used by Force wielders to throw around objects and enemies alike, toss their lightsabers around as a boomerang, float themselves to levitate in place, violently contort foe’s bodies, choke them, and other stuff. Though heavier objects can take more effort on the part of the wielder, and overuse of it can quickly exhaust the wielder, hence why it tends to only be used in short bursts.

Force Stasis

The force’s telekinesis can also be used to block attacks and freeze them in place, which is used as a form of defense. This can be used to block attacks headed for the user and freeze enemies in place, and can be used on less physical objects, such as blaster bolts and lightsaber blades. Kylo, who Rey should compare to, was able to use it to keep himself grounded against a ship’s blastoff and he’s even able to instinctively block a blaster bolt which would have been fatal otherwise. However, the freezing does not last forever, and can require conscious effort to keep in place for long periods of time.

Mind Trick

Another notable ability of the force is in its ability to manipulate the minds of beings, making them forcibly do actions the Jedi wishes to make them do. This was actually the first Force Power Rey learned to actively utilize, which she figured out how to use thanks to resisting Kylo Ren’s mind probing. She’s used this power to convince Stormtroopers to turn the other way, make Finn go away for his protection when fighting Kylo, make an alien criminal turn himself in, daze and confuse enemies in the middle of battle, and even unconsciously make creatures fight alongside her. Other Jedi have shown the ability to use this technique to forcibly put others to sleep, mess with their memories, and can use it to affect multiple people at once. However, this is not a power that can be used on just anyone, as stronger willed people, certain alien species, and other force sensitive beings can resist the effects of it. It is possible to force a stronger willed being under their control, though this required the efforts of 3 Jedi masters working together to accomplish and was noted to be risky on the mind of the affected person

Force Sense

Force Sensitive beings are able to tap into the force to enhance their awareness of the world. They can detect other people and tell if they’re in pain or dead, tell if people are lying or if they’re aware of their presence, and even sense their emotional states, which she has used to her advantage mid combat. This is to the point where she’s noted blindfolds don’t work on her, and other Jedi have shown the ability to fight while blinded unimpeded. They’re also aware of big shifts in the balance of the Force, such as when multiple people felt Kylo Ren’s fall into darkness, including a younger Rey. When in battle, these senses take the form of precognition, being able to predict the next moves of opponents and instinctively counter as needed. Though it’s not a complete defense, as it’s not as effective if she’s physically exhausted or dealing with multiple attackers at once

Mind Probe

Rey has also been able to use this ability, which allows the user to sense and sift through the thoughts, emotions, and memories of a target. She’s able to sense relevant memories from people talking about events, make others see specific images, and this can work even on targets who are far away. If a force user is aware of an attempt to probe their mind by another, they can forcibly shield their mind from its effects and even get memories from the attacker in return.

Force Vision

Jedi are able to experience premonitions of the past, present, and future, which can come to them when they’re sleeping or meditating. While they are treated as prophetic, they are not completely absolute and could be left up to interpretation, with the viewer’s emotions potentially causing them to misinterpret their meaning.

Psychometry

A more specialized version of the Force Visions, this is an ability where the Force user is able to touch an inanimate object and learn about the person or event where the item was previously discovered. This first comes in the forms of them sensing voices from the object in question that can draw them to it, before then causing them to experience visions of its history upon physically interacting with the object. These visions are fairly brief for the user themself, and can also extend to sensing energies from locations to learn of their histories.

Force Healing

Learned from one of the ancient Jedi texts, Rey has shown the ability to use the force to heal the wounds of others, which she does by transferring her life force into theirs. This can be used to heal even critical wounds, though the process can leave her exhausted if overused, and as Kylo showed, could kill the user from the effort outright if they're not careful. She’s also been able to use it to repair a kyber crystal which she used in her self made lightsaber. Worth noting is that it does not seem like it can let the user heal themselves, as the ability to take life energy from others to revitalize themselves was explicitly from the Sith’s corruption of the technique, known as Force Drain

In Star Wars Battlefront II, she also has the ability to heal herself when killing enemies, though whether or not this is an actual ability or just game mechanics is a bit unclear.

Force Amplification

Force sensitive users can naturally use the Force to increase their body’s physicality. Rey is  able to use it to jump large distances, control her landings, increase her physical strength, and increase the speed of her attacks

Force Lightning

Thanks to her Sith grandfather, Rey has also been able to tap into this ability that’s more associated with the Dark Side of the Force. Said to be the ultimate physical manifestation of the Force, this sends out a blast of electrical energy which has been described as pure Force energy that's hotter than a sun. This attack is mainly used for the sake of offense, but it has been shown to be able to be used to mess with electronics, even shocking pilots within starships as he attacks the starships from the outside. However, this ability does not seem to be one she has much conscious control over, given she was only able to send it out in a moment of extreme stress.

Insight

In Star Wars Battlefront II, Rey has access to this ability, which exposes nearby enemies on the radar for her and her teammates, hides her from enemy’s radars, and increases her stamina and damage while active.

Other Potential Force Powers

As Rey was directly trained by Luke Skywalker and possesses his sacred Jedi texts, which contain various teachings of Jedi throughout the ages, Rey should likely have knowledge of how to utilize other general Force powers even if she has yet to show them off personally.

Forms

Korra

Avatar State

The Avatar has the ability to draw upon Raava to transform into a powerful super form known as the Avatar State. This form can be activated at will, and when active, boosts their raw power with their bending to a scale few in the series could match, which has been steadily growing since the dawn of time when the first Avatar bonded with Raava. Though it is risky, as if Korra were to fall while accessing it, the Avatar cycle would end for good. The form also normally allows the Avatar to draw on the experiences of their past lives, but after Raava’s temporary defeat at the hands of Vaatu, Korrra lost access to this ability

Speaking of Raava, while she can’t exactly actively defend Korra, she can still help in ways besides lending power. She’s able to help bring her to consciousness in times of need to enter the Avatar State herself, and she should compare to Vaatu, who’s able to forcibly rip spirits out of other’s bodies. Korra was able to draw upon spiritual power to form a giant form to fight in, though this did take time and her being left alone in a specific location for a while so it’s unlikely to be something she could do in the middle of a battle.

Rey

Oneness

Oh god I have to talk about this-

At the end of Rise of Skywalker, to help defeat Palpatine, Rey ends up channeling what seems to be the power of all of the previous Jedis. This is fairly vaguely defined in the film itself, but in the novelization this state was directly described as “Oneness”. If you’re unfamiliar, this is something that was originally established in the Legends continuity as being a special form powerful Jedi could tap into to become one with the Force while still alive, and this is meant to be the Canon equivalent of the form. Might seems a bit out of nowhere, but it was actually previously established in other canon material.

This form is described as being a strength a Jedi can call upon when asked to deal with a near impossible situation, with the Jedi acting as a living conduit for the Force. The novelization also directly explains that the form was possible through absorbing power from the Force itself, which is everywhere, so it should be hypothetically standard for Rey to use. Though unlike the Oneness in the Legends continuity, there’s not really anything we know the form offers in canon besides a power increase gained from drawing on the power of all the Jedi who are now one with the Force, as well as seemingly giving them access to knowledge to an extent.

One thing we do know for sure is that this form is very taxing. After defeating Palpatine, Rey literally ended up dying from the effort of using the form, with the only reason she lived being because Kylo gave up his own life while healing her. Earlier we also see her attempting to commune with their spirits, only to be unsuccessful, which along with the previous description of the state, suggests that Rey would be normally unable to access the form unless she’s in a dire circumstance where she needs to use it as a last resort.

Scaling

Korra

Team Avatar (TLOK)

Korra’s main allies throughout her adventures. She has been shown to be on par with them in base, and as the Avatar, she should likely be above them at her peak in the Avatar State.

Team Avatar (ATLA)

The main group of allies for Korra’s predecessor, Korra has had several encounters with these guys when they were older, even being personally trained by Toph and Katara. She also should scale to Aang due to being his reincarnation, who like her has shown to be on par with them in base and above them in the Avatar state.

Other Benders

Not only have both Team Avatars shown themselves to be some of the best benders of history, the Avatar is also meant to be the strongest Bender in the world and they have regularly shown to be able to take on practically every other bender worth their salt in the series, meaning Korra should scale to every other notable bender feat in the series.

Previous Avatars

As Korra is the newest reincarnation of the Avatar, who have all been shown to be the top dog of the Avatar world, and have been stated to have been growing in power over the ages, she should be able to scale to the power of the previous Avatars.

The Spirits

The Avatars have also had numerous encounters with the spirits of the series. Most notably for Korra, she was able to fuse with Raava and fight off Vaatu, everyone’s favorite evil kite who is treated as the strongest spirit in the spirit world. As such, at her best she should scale to the various feats done by the spirits.

Rey

Kylo Ren

The most obvious character to scale Rey too would be her main rival in the Sith, Kylo Ren. The two have had numerous confrontations throughout their stories, with Rey growing to be an equal in combat by the time of his death. As such, Rey should scale to Kylo Ren’s feats.

The Jedi

Rey should definitely be comparable to the previous Jedi of the Star Wars universe, as she does draw on the same powers they do, which is backed up by Luke stating he feared the power of her and Kylo. This is especially so when she’s using Oneness, as that form directly calling upon the strength of all previous Jedi means it should fully scale to them to an extent.

The Sith

By virtue of being comparable to previous Jedi, Rey should also be comparable to the feats of the previous Sith Lords in the universe. While the idea of her fully scaling to the greatest feats of them normally is fairly questionable, given her Oneness form was able to directly take down her dear old Grandpa Sheev, who is commonly treated as the greatest Sith Lord, she should also be scaling to them in this form as well.

Other Characters

Through various scaling chains too complicated to break down here, Rey should also solidly compare to various other feats done by more notable characters that don’t quite fit into the other categories.

Weaknesses

Korra

Korra is certainly skilled as a bender, but she does still have her weak points. While she has worked to temper it, she does have a tendency to get hot headed and brash, making her fairly reckless if pushed. She also lacks the Avatar state’s usual connection to her past lives, meaning she can’t tap into the experiences of her past lives, and if she’s killed within the Avatar State the cycle of the Avatar will end permanently. Finally, using any bending besides fire requires the element to be physically present in the first place, and bending requiring free movement means her capabilities are significantly reduced if she happens to end up restrained.

Rey

First off, it is worth noting that despite her natural aptitude, Rey is still relatively new to using her Force powers and the lightsaber in comparison to more skilled Jedi, and is not fully trained. This means she’s not had a very good track record when it comes to more skilled opponents than her, as she tends to quickly end up folding against masters in the way of the Force. She also can act impulsively due to her naivety, and when fighting she can let her emotions get the better of her in times of stress. Finally, while the Force is powerful, it’s not a completely limitless power, as it can leave a strain on the body of its wielder if overused.

Before the Verdict

Cosmic Level Avatar

Now in the world of Avatar, there is one particular character that tends to be cited as a way to scale characters to cosmic levels of power, that being the Moon Spirit, who is able to control the rise and fall of the moon. Taken at face value, this spirit can be seen as far more powerful than the standard power levels of the ATLA verse. However, the question of how exactly anyone scales to it is a bigger question mark.

For starters, no Zhao killing the moon spirit’s fish form does not make him moon level, as the entire reason he was able to do it was because that form was completely helpless physically, hence why it was hidden away. The bigger question is in regards to Raava and Vaatu, as them being treated as the strongest spirits means they, and by proxy Korra, should logically be stronger than the Moon Spirit. However, the issue is that it’s never really established how exactly the Moon Spirit’s ability to affect the moon really works, whether it’s through a power that allows it to physically move the moon or if it’s some sort of ability that nothing scales to. This is especially so when you consider that, despite most of the other relevant Spirits being treated as very strong narratively, they never are shown to be so closely tied to the concepts they have control over, so while the moon vanishing when the spirit died could suggest its existence is tied to the literal moon to an extent, there’s not really any reason to assume it’s in any way that’s relevant for VS, as that could simply just be a way of representing the power of the moon vanishing.

Also while we’re on the topic, there are the guys who were stated to be able to move the sun. Maybe there’s an argument for it being a valid feat, but between the throwaway nature of the line, the fact in context it was referring to a group of benders using a temporary amp meaning it’s questionable to assume anyone scales to it normally, there being no real way to quantify the feat itself due to only being stated, the fact it is not at all in line with how firebending is portrayed mechanically elsewhere in the series, and the fact this is a humongous outlier even if you buy the moon level stuff, this feat is not valid at all in my opinion.

Relativistic Avatar

ATLA as a verse has commonly been seen as capping at lightning timing when it comes to speed. However, there have been a couple recent arguments that could help bring it up into the light dodging ranges, which I will go over now. The following arguments are mostly paraphrased from the Korra vs Delsin blog mentioned above, so go there if you want a more detailed breakdown.

Starting with the one I feel is the least valid, some have suggested scaling to Yue’s spirit going to the moon. Putting aside my issues in using these moments as speed feats at all, the big issue here is that there’s not really any reason to assume she’s physically moving to the Moon in orbit. Everytime in the series where her spirit goes to the moon, her full movements are offscreen, whether that be disappearing from their sight entirely or she suddenly appearing next to the character in question in close proximity to them. The only real case where you could argue she physically moves down is in the canonical flash game Escape from the Spirit World, but even in this, she first appears offscreen without showing her movements and her returning to the moon has her visibly disappear from sight rather than go all the way to the moon herself. So the idea she’s physically crossing this whole distance rather than simply teleporting or something similar is far too questionable to be fair game. And even then, the fact this is a travel speed feat that no one reacts to the full journey of also makes it questionable how applicable it would be to anyone’s stats, as the fact her journey is explicitly a straight line means it is not valid as a reaction speed feat for her.

The next major source of this is in spirit energy, which is the vague energy that’s launched by the spirit portals, The Colossus’ spirit cannon, Vaatu’s beams, etcetera. While there has been a notable argument that this qualifies as an energy that is fired at the speed of light, I do have issues with it being a valid source. Now it does have several major instances of showing it following light rules, such as displaying refraction, diffusing while lighting up the surrounding area, and how electromagnetism is involved in its channeling. However, there are also issues with it under light timing rules, most notably with how the beams are seen emitting force and curving. While curving could arguably be explained away thanks to the Faraday effect, the issue is that no such phenomena can discount the issue in the beam emitting physical force. Some have cited solar sailing, given it is technically proof light photons can emit force, but that’s ignoring how solar sailing utilizes an amount of force so miniscule it’s only in the vacuum of space where it is remotely noticeable, so using it as proof to disprove that “emitting force” is an issue on a force strong enough to knock a person back significantly is fairly ludicrous in my opinion. There’s also the far more notable issue in how the beams fired by the spirit energy cannon consistently cause explosions. This can’t really be explained away as a result of a scientific phenomena, as something like superheating, which is how lightbulbs explode, is specifically caused by too much energy being stuck in an enclosed space at once, so beams directly causing explosions like this simply aren’t possible if you were to treat it as a realistic light beam.

I also think some of the arguments for it being valid that were presented in the thread linked above are rather unconvincing on their own merits. While in-universe characters and out of universe sources have called the energy “light”, it’s only been in the context of it being a source of light, not directly describing the energy as light itself. Saying that’s proof the energy is meant to be light would be like taking someone describing a fire as light as proof fire is light speed. And while Varrick, a genius scientist, has referred to beams of the energy as “lasers”, this was specifically in the context of describing an in-universe movie inspired by real events which was acknowledged as being very inaccurate to said real events. While these “lasers” were inspired by the actual beams caused by the spirit energy which he witnessed, it’s a bit questionable to assume him describing a laser vaguely inspired by these beams in a hypothetical movie that already was taking numerous artistic licenses as a reason to assume the original beams in question are meant to be light speed lasers. As such, it’s rather questionable in my opinion to assume that there’s sufficient evidence that spirit energy is fired as a fully valid light speed projectile.

However, there is a very roundabout way to argue that this energy is still in the relativistic range, and that’s in how spirit energy has been shown to be able to passively create Aurora compositions. Aang awakening, The Spirit Portal opening and Vaatu’s energy spreading were all shown to be able to create Aurora Borealises in the background, which move at relativistic speeds. The argument goes that, as Wan and Korra herself were able to react to Vaatu’s more concentrated energy blasts, they should likely be able to scale above something he does just as a casual byproduct of his presence, which is backed up by the fact Vaatu himself was able to use them to travel around the world.

Now, while this is an interesting argument, I’m not sure I fully buy using it. For one thing, as mentioned this is a very roundabout method of actually scaling people to this, and there’s not anything directly confirming these auroras are meant to be a direct byproduct of spirit energy in particular. There’s also nothing really confirming anyone should react at the full speeds of the auroras, as while Vaatu was able to travel through them, no one reacts to his movements while he’s within it and he clearly did not need to react to anything while moving at that speed.

Cosmic Canon Star Wars

For Star Wars, Legends does have many cases of cosmic level scaling for AP, but in terms of information that’s just in the Disney canon that can get a bit more questionable. But there are a couple notable feats for them that I do feel are solid enough to include. The most solid of these comes from The High Republic: Light of the Jedi, a novel which is part of the canon. In this novel, some space debris was threatening to destroy a moon, which led to a group of Jedi using the force to slow it. The calc here was in regards to the original 4 which aimed to stop it, and while they weren’t able to completely halt it, they were explicitly able to slow it significantly. This would mean they had to be explicitly countering the kinetic energy of the debris, and as such they would be able to scale to its energy. This also isn’t really something you can write off as an outlier, as not only is it a major plot point and the ultimate conflict of the book, it’s also explicitly portrayed as the extreme limit of their strength. As seen in how they ultimately stopped the debris by calling upon various Jedi throughout the galaxy, some of which straight up died from the effort. The other major point against this being an outlier is that it’s hardly the only time Canon Jedi have been shown to operate on a cosmic scale. In the novel Aftermath, which is also fully in the bounds of the canon, it’s mentioned that in the past several Jedi had banded together to destroy a comet that was said to be able to destroy worlds. While this feat is practically impossible to lock down numbers for, given its vague nature, it also pretty clearly establishes that Jedi are able to work at a cosmic scale altogether, making the idea of this kind of feat being consistent far from unbelievable.

Though there are methods to argue individual Force users can hit this scale, they’re a lot harder to justify using. This is mainly in regards to Darth Vader, who does have some notable feats some have used to justify his cosmic scaling in the canon. There is his infamous planet explosion survival, but as he was not within the epicenter of that blast, he would only be experiencing a significantly lower amount of energy from that instance. There’s also his “cosmic” form, but as this video breaks down, that form is clearly meant as more showing a symbolic journey rather than being a literally powerful form. Finally, there’s of course the statements of him being stronger than the Death Star, whether that be his claim that the Force makes it look insignificant or a statement that he’s the Empire’s ultimate weapon which suggest he’s superior to it. These could be seen as legitimate, but considering the fact that his original statement was referring to the Force in general and not specifically his ability to wield it and the latter statement being in reference to a time where the Death Star was not active, it’s a bit more of a stretch to take this as absolute proof he should scale to it.

Is Canon Star Wars FTL?

Likewise, while the Legends continuity has had many cases of light speed and beyond timing, when looking at the Disney canon this can get a bit more questionable for some. That being said, I do think there are several valid arguments for it.

First off, there’s the speed of the various blasters. While Legends does have numerous statements of these weapons firing projectiles at the speed of light, the main canon information does lack any direct statements like this, leading some to conclude canon blasters fire slower projectiles. However, there is information supporting blasters being light speed in canon. Official guides have described blasters as firing particle beams, which are real life phenomena that typically hit speeds of 90% the speed of light. Beyond that, there is also this direct word of god statement from Matt Martin, a Senior Creative Executive at Lucasfilm, in which he confirms that the idea of treating blasters as fast as real lasers is accurate. So, the many cases of characters outpacing blasters in canon are meant to be actual lasers.

There’s also the various literary statements of Count Dooku and Darth Vader being able to attack at light speed, MagnaGuards having light speed reflexes, and Anakin and Obi-Wan pulling a fraction of light speed maneuver. These can be used to help add consistency to the idea of them scaling to this level, though there are issues with these. Aside from the general issue feats of this nature have in “is this meant as a literal description or just flowery language describing them moving fast”, the big issue with these are whether or not they should be treated as part of the canon in the first place. On the one hand, these feats are from novelizations of the films which were released before the Disney canon purge, meaning they should likely fall under the Legends continuity umbrella and are therefore inapplicable to characters outside of that. On the other hand, these novelizations are special cases in that they are directly adapting the events of the original films, which are still fully canon, and they don’t really diverge from the original events of the movies significantly enough to not be seen as at least canon adjacent in my opinion. And it’s pretty consistent with more definitively canon material, such as the aftermentioned Old Republic feat of pulling debris, which is from a novel that is fully canon.

Finally, there’s hyperspace. For the uninitiated, the “faster than light” travel done by spaceships in the Star Wars canon involves slipping into hyperspace, an alternate dimension that lets ships go fast, which is what the weird light tunnel you see is. Now in my research I wasn’t able to find any cases of characters reacting to objects within hyperspace like in Legends so using that as the way to scale character’s reactions to it was off the table. However, there was a pretty major case of Han Solo managing to react to the Starkiller base immediately after leaving hyperspace in the Force Awakens, which can get very high numbers, as his ship’s velocity was still very high in this case. And Kylo has his own case of reacting to an object outside of hyperspace in The Rise of Skywalker. While this isn’t totally clear in the movie itself, the novelization does pretty clearly indicate he was able to react to objects after leaving it. These instances indicate characters are able to react at these speeds, though they are weird enough in execution to be somewhat questionable to fully scale in my opinion.

Verdict

Stats

Now these two were surprisingly pretty comparable overall when it came to their base stats, with both having many town to city level feats at their base levels. Korra’s best feat in this regard is pretty simple, as she should scale to Ghazan of the Red Lotus, who’s feat of melting the Northern Air Temple clocked in at 8.85 Megatons. As for Rey, things were a bit trickier to lock down for her, as while there are feats which exceed this, Rey scaling to the full strength of characters like Darth Vader or Palpatine is a bit questionable given her lack of experience in the Force. The best feat I feel she could reasonably compare to was Kanan and Ezra’s asteroid tossing at 3.95 - 7.91  Megatons, which at best can match the value of Ghazan’s feat. Though given this was a feat requiring two people, this value should be at least halved, and could be argued as even lower given Erza at the time was also a noob in the Force, suggesting Kanan was doing more of the heavy lifting in that instance. As such, Korra held the edge in power when the two were in their base forms.

But when using the power of the Avatar State and Oneness respectively, things shift the other way. Korra’s best solid scaling when in the Avatar State would be Kyoshi’s island movement, which clocked in at 3.1 Teratons. This was fairly comparable to Rey’s scaling to Darth Vader causing earthquakes on Mustafar, which clocked in at 3.9 Teratons. However, Rey had several arguments which were far stronger than this level, most notably scaling to the High Republic feat of stopping the moon shattering debris, which clocked in at 38.08 Petatons. For context, one Petaton is equal to a thousand Teratons, which meant Rey was about 12 thousand times stronger than Korra. You could arguably push her even higher with scaling to the moon spirit, but with equal leeway you could also push Rey higher by scaling her to Darth Vader’s scaling to the Death Star, which would be similarly far stronger. At that point the only real counter would be the one star level feat, which as mentioned has very little ground of being legitimate at all. As such, Rey had the edge in strength at their peaks.

In terms of speeds, there was also a lot of comparable stuff on the lower ends, thanks to both series having plenty of cases of lightning timing from Lightning Benders and the Sith’s Force Lightning respectively. Both of the two’s best feats in this regard from Aang and Mace Windu clocked in at Mach 2458 and Mach 2478 respectively, putting them pretty dead even in speeds without their higher arguments. With them though, Rey definitely had a significant edge. Not only did she generally have the more compelling arguments for scaling to relativistic speeds in the first place, she also had far faster points to draw on beyond this end. Even without bringing up the MFTL ends brought by characters reacting out of Hyperspace, Kylo’s feat of being able to instantly react to attacks that are moving at 90% the speed of light was far faster than what you could bring for Korra, who at best was only scaling to 11% the speed of light, making Rey about 9 times faster at the bare minimum. As such, speed also went to Rey,

Arsenal & Abilities

Now when it came to comparing the two’s arsenals, Korra did have a clearly obvious edge in her overall attacking potential. She had a far greater variety of options with her various bending techniques, which also gave her a pretty wide amount of AOE. This could potentially lead to her being able to catch Rey out with an attack faster than she could dodge, but that wasn’t likely. Between her reaction speed edge, the Force giving her precognition, and her ability to telekinetically move objects, form barriers, or freeze objects in palace meant the odds of her being hit by a stray attack was rather slim. This was a very big issue for Korra, as while she does have more esoteric methods of fighting, these are generally less go to methods for her to be fighting with.

Speaking of those less esoteric methods, both did have several methods which could potentially let them take the win, though some were less likely to work than others. Korra likely couldn’t use airbending to try to suffocate Rey, as the Force has helped protect other users from conditions as extreme as the vacuum of space, nor was it likely for her to be able to freeze her insides, as this was technique she’s never personally utilized and would require getting in close. It also wasn’t likely for her to be able to energy bend Rey’s Force powers away, as not only is this also a technique she never personally utilized and required her to catch and restrain Rey, given the Force is an external energy source that is accessed by characters having midi-chlorians, which is pretty unlike the purely internal and spiritual bending. Finally, spirit bending has been argued as a method which could destroy souls outright, and while it could be used as a way to finish off Rey, the technique has only been used by Korra as a finishing move, so it wasn’t going to be useful in ending a foe who was fully capable of dodging the attacks.

Rey had several of her own methods to potentially win the fight herself, and Korra could manage to resist several of them. Korra scaling to people who have broken out of mental attacks meant Rey likely couldn’t Mind Trick or Probe her, and her ability to break out of bloodbending meant trying to directly mess with her body telekinetically would be unsuccessful. Her weapons were also definitely superior to Korra’s staff, with the blaster firing a projectile that’s too fast for Korra to reliably dodge and her lightsaber being far hotter than anything Korra scales to, to the point where it could conceivably kill or at least significantly injure Korra in a single blow. However, the blaster didn’t have the strength to kill Korra itself and her metal bending could definitely break that, as well as arguably the lightsaber given it was explicitly made of scavenged materials rather than the purified metals more traditional lightsabers are made of. However, Rey did have more specific methods which could take down Korra, as Stasis could block her movements in a method not even her resistance to blood bending could break out of, and Force Lightning burning as hot as a star would let it quickly do a lot of damage to Korra, as she has never resisted something that hot.

The last thing to bring up would be their forms. The Avatar State would be a fairly good way for Korra to quickly start dominating in a fight, as it is far easier for her to activate than Oneness, which specifically required being in a moment of need. However, the form didn’t do anything to change her notable speed disadvantage, as characters like Zaheer and Ozai managing to dodge around attacks from the Avatar State while staying in their base forms indicates the form didn’t really offer a boost to speed, just one to power. As such, the odds of giving her the chance to take Rey out before she could have a chance to activate Oneness was rather slim, and once Oneness was activated, there really wasn’t much Korra could do in response. The form’s massively greater power and Rey’s already faster speeds meant Korra would be quickly overwhelmed by attacks in this form, and while she did technically have better survivability thanks to her healing being something she could use on herself, it was still healing that can take time to deal with more severe injuries, meaning it was unlikely to be able to led her come back from the sheer power of the form. While Oneness was arguably something that could kill Rey as well, in context it’s worth remembering Rey had just gotten almost all of her energy drained by Palpatine in that instance, so in a fight where she’d be more healthy it’s unlikely the stress would be enough to kill her.

Tertiary Factors

Now in terms of the two’s mentalities, Rey was likely the smarter of the two, given her impressive displays of engineering. However, Korra definitely held the edge in experience and skill. Not only has she been actively training with her bending for most of her life, much of this training was under some of the most skilled benders of her time, and she’s also kept up with many other impressive benders in combat herself. As opposed to this, Rey only really learned of her Force powers later in life, and while surviving on her own on Jakku is impressive, she still lacked much notable experience until joining the resistance. While she was trained under Luke Skywalker, this was for a fairly short period of time and much of her later skills were self taught. And while she has kept up with similarly skilled characters like Kylo, it’s also consistently been shown that foes with far greater experience like Snoke or Palpatine are quickly able to make short work of her, with her only managing to beat them thanks to extenuating circumstances. As such, there really wasn’t much of a question that Korra had the advantage when it came to skill. However, that wasn’t likely to be enough to get around all of Rey’s more notable advantages.

Conclusion

“No matter what happens, no matter how crazy things get, I’ll always try to restore balance.”

  • More skilled and experienced

  • Bisexual icon

  • Jeremy Zuckerman’s score

"The Resistance is not one place. It's alive. It's everywhere. We will rise against you.”

Advantages:

  • Far stronger with Oneness

  • Comparable in speeds without relativistic ends, far faster with them

  • Superior weaponry

  • Had wincons which could give her the chance to take out Korra

  • Once she accessed Oneness, there wasn’t much Korra could do

  • Is a Star Wars character on Capejedi’s Blogs so this was clearly rigged on her favor all along

  • John Williams’ score

Disadvantages:

  • Weaker in base

  • Arguably vulnerable to certain wincons of Korra

  • Oneness wasn’t as readily accessible as the Avatar State

  • Not as skilled or experienced

  • The Rise of Skywalker

  • Online discourse

Korra was certainly a well experienced Avatar, but between Rey’s superior strength and speed, and the superior options given by the Force, Rey was unlikely to be a legend she could end. While some may rise to resist this result, Rey’s the winner, and you gotta deal with it.

The winner is Rey Skywalker.

<read Kagurabachi its peak>

Hey all, Capejedi here. I’d like to thank everyone who reads these for all their support on these blogs. I've enjoyed making them a lot and hope they’re informative to everyone. I’m going to take a bit to talk here as I do have some news to share about the future, since we are approaching the end of my first season / batch / whatever you wanna call it of these blogs.

Though, this will have to start with some bad news. If you recall this post that was at the end of Gordon vs Isaac, I did use that to announce a couple bonus blogs I was going to be working on. I will officially announce here that both the Scott vs Travis Updated doc and the Joker vs Giorno blogs are officially canceled. For the former, that was mainly a case of it being almost entirely a discussion of newer Scott Pilgrim scaling points rather than anything to go over for Travis, and as such I feel that any details worth going over on that would be better saved for a different discussion involving the series in the future. As for Joker vs Giorno, yeah frankly I’ve made very little progress on that and there is far too much to go over on that for a solo blog like myself to cover, which combined with some recent announcements regarding Death Battle, means I really got burnt out trying to cover it and I feel that I should make the executive decision to cut it off. Apologies to anyone who was looking forward to either of those, but this is just something I felt the need to do. As for Inspector Gadget vs Darkwing Duck, that’s still being worked on and I will announce here that I am giving that a tentative release date of “sometime late November”.

However, to make up for this, I’m going to be holding a special mini vote. If you recall, Gordon vs Isaac was a bonus blog decided by a popular tourney vote, and several other matches from the tourney were also made full blogs. I’ve decided to make another bonus blog poll made of 6 options from the tourney to pick from, three of which were fairly popular frontrunners that didn’t win the ultimate vote, and three of which are personal selections that I’m particularly interested in breaking down. Whichever one of these options ends up winning will be selected as another bonus blog, which will be worked on alongside the final blog of this first season. Please CLICK HERE to access the vote for the bonus blog. Both the winner of the poll and said final blog will be revealed and the end of my next blog. As for which one that is? Well…
